Rockin' weekend in Bothwell. By Chris McGregor - The Daily News
(photo right - Guitarist Eric Broadbent of Chatham based band Finding Core... played at Rockin the Bush concert in Bothwell Saturday)

Bothwell - Despite low attendance numbers, organizers of the first Rockin the Bush concert are confident the event has a future. Only a few hundred people took in the two day concert featuring 15 local bands who donated their time.

The Event was a fundraiser for Chatham-Kent Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Organizer's said concert-goers had a great time at the show. "People are having a blast", he said. "The bands are awesome!".

The the concept for Rockin the Bush developed after other band members grew tired of the Battle of the Bands concept. "We wanted to have fun instead of saying our band is better than your band". Organizers are hoping a sponsor will catch onto the show for next year, plans for which are already in the works. Tina Later and Melissa Cammaert of Chatham camped out to hear their favourite local band Horrorshow. "We get to jump around and go crazy", Cammaert said. "They should have bigger bands, ones that are well known so more people come".

Controversy erupted when a neighbour living near the concert site owned by Ann and Dan Wright allegedly removed direction signs to the event. They had complained about the noise from the show which ended after 1 a.m.

"They were taking down the signs on Highway 2", Ann Wright said. She said a bus load of Tilbury music fans and many campers from Rondeau were not able to find the concert and turned around. "We want to give the Big Brothers $10,000 to $15,000", she said. "To do that to a charity is disgusting. That's private property". She said neighbours were notified about the weekend show and most were cooperative and supportive.

It was perfect weather for an outdoor rock concert, as Rockin the Bush organizers brought in a solid line-up of local bands to Bothwell's ShayD Park for the two day festival. Despite the low attendance numbers, it didn't stop the bands from giving it their all, such as Finding Core guitarist, Eric Broadbent. The "big" winners of the weekend were the Big Sisters of Chatham-Kent who received a portion of the proceeds.

I Mother Earth draws an excellent crowd
Posted on: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 by Dave Richie

It was a great night for rock lovers in Chatham Saturday night as I Mother Earth stormed into town and unleashed their Santana-esque brand of new rock to the crowd at the Eight Ball Tavern.

Featuring an expansion of the club's stage, as well as a bigger sound system, the show was completely packed, especially up front (a rarity that any Eight Ball regular can identify).

I Mother Earth, which includes members Jag Tanna (guitar), Christian Tanna (drums), Bruce Gordon (bass) and the lively lead singer Brian Byrne, ripped through the band's hits like One More Astronaut, Levitate and Summertime In The Void. IME's latest single, Like The Sun, garnered the loudest crowd response of the night.

In addition to Like The Sun, the band showcased some other new songs from their latest release, The Quicksilver Meat Dream.

In the later parts of the set, IME broke into numerous instrumentals, sometimes lasting up to 15 minutes. For some people in the crowd, it was intriguing, to others, it was noticeably boring, as the crowd in front of the stage slowly thinned out. Nonetheless, it was some of the best music the Eight Ball has hosted in quite sometime.

Openers Clark Nova put on a noteworthy set containing nothing less than in your face hard rock. They came on strong and remained strong until the very last note. Over the past year or so, this band has gone through a couple of line-up changes, but it appeared as if they have found the right ingredients. It's obvious these guys are on their way to the top of the Canadian market.

Before Clark Nova took to the stage, Chatham's own Finding Core began the show. They are definitely in a class of their own combining the best of Seattle and Nu-Metal with the guitarwork of Eddie Van Halen.

The night was an overall success; not necessarily regarding the performances, but concerning the turnout. There hasn't been a lot of big crowds for rock shows in Chatham over the past two years, especially for 19 and over concerts. Let's hope this is a sign that things will pick up for the rock scene here in Chatham.

Gaining Exposure
Local Bands putting on show to show off their original talents.

By Ellwood Shreve
The Daily News

If you enjoy local bands who play original music, the Kent Belgian Dutch Club is the place to be on Nov. 16. Three local bands will be featured during an all ages show, which will have no alcohol served.

Members of the band Finding Core, the headline act, said the event is being organized to give a couple young local bands - Horrorshow and Freecell, an opportunity for some exposure and show people the kind of talent there is in Chatham-Kent.
"We're trying to promote local talent and original music," said Finding Core. "The show will be a trial run with bigger things to come if all goes well!"

They noted the original intent of the show was to make it a charity event, but it was decided to try to get some experience in organizing this kind of concert, first.

"We kind of want to see how it goes and feel it out","If all goes well, we hope to put on a bigger event with more bands next time, with all the proceeds going to a local charity".

The music being featured is alternative/heavy rock, and they are hoping the 200-person venue will be filled, especially since the two young bands are made up of students from Ursuline College Chatham (freecell) and Chatham-Kent Secondary School (horrorshow).

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets are available through Finding Core's band members, Todd Lenover, Eric Broadbent, J.Z. Taine, as well as Cory Knight from UCC and Justin White from CKSS.

Tickets can also be purchased at Musical Strings 'N' Things, King St. Pawn Brokers and Sound Trax.
